JUANA, JUAN

October 9, 2020 | CHICAGO, IL

This seven-minute audio documentary piece reflects on the work of Juana Durán, a visual artist based in Chicago, IL. Growing up in a Purepecha family moving in a van across the US Midwest, Juana uses surrealist imagery as the main material in her art practice to reconstruct events, history and missing pieces out of her own memory.

Juana, Juan focuses on the journey of loss and unfinished healing surrounding the making of her latest piece, created after the sudden passing of relatives within her community, including her uncle, Juan, amidst the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19.

TLAHUELILPAN: NEVER THE SAME (WEB)

October 18th, 2019 | TLAHUELILPAN, MX

A group of teenagers recount the tragic events that took place on January 18th, 2019, in Tlahuelilpan, Hidalgo, after an accidental leak in a gasoline pipeline caused an explosion that killed at least 139 people, injuring dozens more.

Tlahuelilpan is a small city in central Mexico, surrounded by mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The area is largely known for its ancient farming tradition, and, more recently, due to the common practice of unregulated gasoline distribution, known in Spanish as huachicoleo.

AND THE MUSIC OF THE PLANTS

Anyah Dishon is an Austin-based musician that has dedicated her career to make music with her plants. What started just as a desire to find inspiration for her compositions, it has now become the center of her work. The core of this piece is the relationship between humans and plants, a territory that although may seem mundane for many of us, it holds in itself a broad universe of creative possibilities yet to be unfolded.

I produced this piece as part of the Transom Traveling Workshop 2019 in Austin, TX.

2019. Length: 6 min.
